Dual Enrollment Guidelines

What is dual enrollment?

“Dual enrollment” is an arrangement which allows a high school student to take a
college-level course and receive both college and high school credit. (Other programs may
allow a student to get college credit but not high school credit [joint enrollment] or high-school
credit but not college credit [concurrent enrollment].)

Requirements for Dual Enrollment:

  • Students must be enrolled with Gateway for the school year in which they plan to do dual enrollment. Be sure to include educational plan including specific high-school course titles. We are usually able to send out recommendation letters and sign consent forms for dual enrollment two weeks after the student is enrolled for that year. Our new applications are available in the summer before each year and we begin processing applications for the coming year on June 1. Please write Dual Enrollment in the upper right of the Gateway application. We strongly suggest that all necessary paperwork be sent together.
  • Current grades must be turned in to Gateway early enough to allow our Dual Enrollment Department to make sure they are correct and to post them on the transcript. If grades are not correct (dated with the date the semester ended, signed, correct course titles given, appropriate grades and credits assigned), then the Dual Enrollment Department will contact the parent to discuss revisions. Please read carefully the teacher directions on the back of the grade report form and the high school guidelines in order to record grades properly.
  • Report ACT/SAT scores. Any ACT/SAT scores not reported to us directly by the ACT/SAT organizations should be sent to us by the parent prior to application for dual enrollment. (For those students who use our high school code (431-421) when registering for the test, the ACT/SAT scores are automatically sent directly to the parents as well as to Gateway. For dual enrollment, please mention these test results in your correspondence so we can be sure of their inclusion.)
  • Send us a photocopy or fax of the course description page of the college catalog showing those classes that the student hopes to take for the current semester. Gateway’s dual enrollment counselor must approve all dual enrollment courses.
  • Send the name of the program and the name and address of the college to Gateway.

Dual enrollment paperwork requires more than just a signature. Please allow at least two weeks for completion of this process. (The student must already be enrolled to begin this process.) Please note that Gateway must:

  • Verify Gateway enrollment of student for appropriate school year
  • Make sure that current grades are received
  • Post grades on the transcript
  • Check for updated ACT/SAT scores and post on the transcript
  • Calculate a GPA
  • Determine appropriate high-school credit for specified college course(s) based on up-to-date transcript of the student
  • Verify Tennessee Grant Form and/or permission forms to ensure that everything is
filled out correctly and then sign the form(s)
  • Copy all forms for the student’s file and send a hard copy to the college or university.

Notes on dual enrollment:

Check with the admissions counselor, website, or catalog of the college for more information. You can usually obtain a Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant Form and a consent form (if required) from the college.

Gateway students are required to take some core courses at home to remain a part of the Gateway program. Dual enrollment may be used to supplement home studies. Students who are taking all of their courses at another institution, however, will not be considered students at Gateway. Also, please note that as soon as a student completes requirements for graduation, he/she is considered a graduate and will receive a diploma approximately two weeks after we receive final grades.

The Gateway Dual Enrollment Department is here to help you with dual enrollment and graduation plans. However, you, the parent, are primarily responsible for making sure that everything is in order and all requirements have been met. We have nearly 1000 juniors and 1000 seniors per year and many request dual enrollment services. We handle dual enrollment requests on a first-come, first-serve basis. Our phone lines are often busy due to the nature of our counseling services. If you are not able to reach us via phone, you may fax your request to (901) 454-9814, or leave a message on our main phone line (901) 454-1606, or email us at Gateway_@BellSouth.net. Address your requests to the Dual Enrollment Counselor.

The Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) (www.CollegePaysTN.com)
administers the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant (and the Tennessee Hope Scholarship for
college students) with funds from the Tennessee lottery.
